Game Analysis:
EAST RUTHERFORD — The Cowboys and Giants open the 2026 season with a Sunday Night Football NFC East matchup at MetLife Stadium. Dallas is trying to improve after back-to-back seven-win seasons, while New York begins the John Harbaugh era after going 4-13 last year. The Giants did beat Dallas 34-17 in the 2025 finale, but the Cowboys won the earlier meeting 40-37 in overtime.
Dallas has plenty of offensive firepower with Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and new addition George Pickens. Pickens has reportedly been one of the Cowboys' standout players throughout the offseason, and he could immediately create problems for a Giants secondary that has been revamped. The Cowboys will have to adjust up front, though, with Pro Bowl guard Tyler Smith on injured reserve and T.J. Bass expected to replace him.
For New York, the biggest storyline is Jaxson Dart entering his first full season as the starter under Harbaugh. The Giants also appear increasingly optimistic that Malik Nabers will return from his ACL injury after practicing fully Wednesday, which would give Dart his most important weapon. Harbaugh has emphasized a more physical identity, so New York will want to establish the run and keep Dallas' offense off the field.
The biggest question is whether the Giants' revamped defense can slow down Dallas' passing game. Quinnen Williams could make life difficult for rookie guard Francis Mauigoa, while George Pickens' matchup against the Giants' secondary is another one to watch. If New York can pressure Prescott and force Dallas into long third downs, the Giants have a legitimate chance to make this a close game.
Overall, this feels like a much more competitive matchup than the records from last season would suggest. Dallas has the more proven offense, but New York has home field, a new coaching staff and potentially a healthy Nabers. I’d give the Cowboys a slight edge, but this could easily come down to the final possession.
