PHILADELPHIA — The Commanders open the 2026 season on the road against the defending NFC East champion Eagles in one of the better divisional matchups of Week 1. Washington is looking to rebound after a disappointing 2025 season, while Philadelphia is trying to build on its division title and get back into the deeper playoff picture. The Eagles are favored by about 5.5 points at home.
Washington’s biggest storyline is Jayden Daniels. After an injury-shortened 2025 season, Daniels enters Year 3 with a revamped supporting cast that includes Stefon Diggs and Rachaad White. The Commanders also have new coordinators on both sides of the ball, so getting Daniels comfortable in David Blough’s offense will be especially important against a strong Eagles defense.
Philadelphia has its own offensive transition, with Sean Mannion taking over as offensive coordinator, but Jalen Hurts and the Eagles’ dominant offensive line remain the foundation. The matchup I’m watching most closely is Philadelphia’s rushing attack against Washington’s revamped defense. The Commanders are expected to use an aggressive, pressure-heavy scheme under Daronte Jones, but their ability to hold up against the Eagles’ physical run game is a major question.
Injuries could also play a role. Washington has several important players on injured reserve, including Laremy Tunsil and Trey Amos, while Odafe Oweh and K’Lavon Chaisson are limited. Philadelphia enters the week in much better shape, with only Jonathan Greenard and Eli Stowers limited in Wednesday’s practice.
