Game Analysis:
KANSAS CITY — The Broncos and Chiefs close out Week 1 with a huge AFC West matchup. Denver is coming off an AFC Championship appearance and returns most of the roster that earned the AFC’s No. 1 seed last season, while Kansas City is looking to bounce back from a shocking five-win season that ended its nine-year playoff streak. The Chiefs are favored by roughly three points at home.
Denver’s biggest storyline is the return of Bo Nix. His season ended with an ankle injury in the divisional round, but he is expected to be ready for Monday night. The Broncos also added Jaylen Waddle to an offense that was already among the league’s better units, giving Nix another explosive option alongside Courtland Sutton.
For Kansas City, everything revolves around Patrick Mahomes. He is expected to start after recovering from the ACL and LCL tears that ended his 2025 season, although his mobility will be one of the biggest things to watch. The Chiefs also added running back Kenneth Walker III, but their offensive line has questions, particularly with left tackle Josh Simmons dealing with a back injury.
The matchup I’m watching most closely is Denver’s defense against Mahomes’ mobility and Kansas City’s pass protection. The Broncos have one of the league’s strongest defenses and have won three straight against the Chiefs, although Mahomes played in only one of those games. If Denver can pressure him without constantly blitzing, the Broncos could control the game.
Overall, this should be one of the better games of Week 1. Denver has more continuity and comes in with enormous expectations, but getting Mahomes back gives Kansas City a major advantage at home. I expect a close, defensive game, but the Chiefs should have just enough late to start the season with a statement win.
