Game Analysis:
GREEN BAY — No. 4 Notre Dame and Wisconsin meet at Lambeau Field in one of the marquee games of Week 1. The Irish enter with legitimate national championship expectations after missing the playoff last season, while Wisconsin is trying to rebound from a disappointing 4-8 campaign under Luke Fickell. Notre Dame is currently a little more than a three-touchdown favorite.
Notre Dame has continuity on its side, especially at quarterback with CJ Carr returning after a strong freshman season. The Irish also bring back star cornerback Leonard Moore, a projected high NFL draft pick, and should have one of the country's better defenses. Wisconsin, meanwhile, has overhauled its roster and will reportedly start transfer quarterback Colton Joseph, giving the Badgers a much different offensive look than last year.
For Wisconsin, the biggest challenge will be protecting Joseph and finding enough offense against Notre Dame's defensive front. The Badgers have dealt with injuries along the offensive line, including questions surrounding Kevin Heywood and Emerson Mandell, which could make an already difficult matchup even tougher. Wisconsin's best path is to establish the run and keep Notre Dame's offense on the sideline.
The Lambeau setting should make this a fun atmosphere, and Wisconsin has enough new talent to potentially keep the game competitive early. Still, Notre Dame has the more proven quarterback, significantly more defensive stability and considerably higher expectations entering the season. I expect the Badgers to put up a fight, but the Irish should pull away in the second half and start the season with a statement win.
