NASHVILLE — No. 9 Ole Miss and No. 24 Louisville meet in the Liberty Mutual Music City Kickoff in the only ranked-vs.-ranked matchup of Week 1. Ole Miss is coming off a historic 2025 season that ended in the College Football Playoff semifinal, while Louisville went 9-4 and enters 2026 with legitimate ACC and playoff aspirations. The Rebels are favored by roughly a touchdown.
Ole Miss brings back two of the biggest offensive stars in the country in quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy. Chambliss was spectacular during last year's playoff run, while Lacy gives the Rebels a powerful complement in the backfield. The biggest question is how quickly the offense adjusts to new coordinator John David Baker after losing Charlie Weis Jr.
Louisville has plenty of firepower of its own, particularly running back Isaac Brown, who rushed for 884 yards and seven touchdowns last season. The Cardinals will also debut Ohio State transfer quarterback Lincoln Kienholz, giving Jeff Brohm another talented young quarterback to develop. How quickly Kienholz settles in against Ole Miss' defensive front could determine whether Louisville can stay with the Rebels.
This should come down to Louisville's ability to protect Kienholz and control the line of scrimmage. Ole Miss has the more proven quarterback and comes in with slightly higher expectations, but Louisville has enough talent to make this a four-quarter game. If Brown can establish the run and Kienholz avoids mistakes, the Cardinals have a real chance to pull the upset.
Overall, this is probably the most intriguing game of the opening weekend. Ole Miss has the experience and offensive star power, but Louisville is good enough to make this uncomfortable. I expect a close game throughout, with Ole Miss having just enough late to escape Nashville with the win.
