TALLAHASSEE — No. 19 SMU travels to Florida State for a major ACC matchup on Labor Day night. The Mustangs are playing their season opener after going 9-4 last year, while Florida State is already 1-0 following a 45-28 win over New Mexico State. With both teams carrying playoff aspirations, this is an important early test for both programs.
SMU has one of the ACC’s more experienced quarterbacks in Kevin Jennings, who returns to lead Rhett Lashlee’s offense. The Mustangs should be able to create problems with their tempo and passing game, but they’ll be facing a Florida State defense that knows it needs to improve after allowing 28 points in Week 0.
For Florida State, quarterback Ashton Daniels is the biggest storyline. He had an uneven debut against New Mexico State, but showed enough composure and playmaking ability to give the Seminoles optimism. Running back/receiver Sam Singleton Jr. was also a standout in the opener and gives FSU another explosive weapon.
The biggest question is whether Florida State can clean up its defensive communication and third-down issues against a much better SMU offense. The Seminoles have the home-field advantage, but SMU is currently favored by around 2.5–3 points, and ESPN’s matchup predictor also gives the Mustangs the edge.
Overall, this should be a close ACC battle, but SMU has the more proven offense entering the matchup. Florida State needs Daniels to play efficiently and avoid the mistakes that hurt the Seminoles in Week 0. If SMU controls the tempo, I expect the Mustangs to pull out a narrow road win.
