SEATTLE — The Patriots and Seahawks open the 2026 NFL season in a rematch of Super Bowl LX, with Seattle hosting after beating New England 29-13 in February. The Seahawks enter as defending champions, while the Patriots are looking to show that last season’s run to the Super Bowl was the beginning of something bigger under Mike Vrabel. Seattle is favored by roughly 4.5 points.
New England’s biggest storyline is Drake Maye and how much the offense has evolved since the Super Bowl. The Patriots added significant help around him, including A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs, giving Maye a much stronger receiving group. Josh McDaniels is also back as offensive coordinator, so there is plenty of reason to expect the Patriots to be more aggressive offensively this season.
Seattle, meanwhile, returns much of the core that won the championship. Sam Darnold remains at quarterback and Jaxon Smith-Njigba is coming off a breakout season, although the Seahawks lost Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker in free agency. The defense should still be the identity of this team, even with a few changes to the secondary and pass rush.
The biggest question is whether New England can handle Seattle’s defense better than it did in the Super Bowl. The Patriots struggled to protect Maye and create explosive plays in that matchup, while Seattle’s pass rush completely disrupted the game. If Maye has time and Brown can consistently win outside, this should look very different from February.
Overall, this should be a much more competitive rematch than the Super Bowl. Seattle has the home-field advantage and continuity, but New England has added enough offensive talent to make this a legitimate test. I’d expect a close, physical opener with Seattle having a slight edge late.
