Game Analysis:
HOUSTON — The Bills and Texans open the 2026 season in one of the AFC’s most intriguing matchups. Buffalo is beginning the Joe Brady era after finishing as one of the league’s highest-scoring offenses last season, while Houston enters with legitimate Super Bowl expectations under DeMeco Ryans. The Texans have also won the last two meetings in Houston, including an eight-sack performance against Josh Allen last season.
Buffalo’s biggest storyline is how the offense changes under Brady, who moved from offensive coordinator to head coach. The Bills added DJ Moore to an already dangerous group led by Allen and James Cook, and they’re expected to use Dalton Kincaid more heavily this season. If Buffalo can protect Allen and create more explosive plays, this could be one of the league’s best offenses again.
Houston has plenty of firepower of its own, but the biggest question is C.J. Stroud. After a difficult 2025 season and a rough playoff performance, Stroud spent the offseason focused on improving physically and mentally. He’ll immediately face a Buffalo defense that has added Bradley Chubb and will be looking to put pressure on him early.
The matchup I’m watching most closely is Houston’s defensive front against Buffalo’s offensive line. Will Anderson Jr. and the Texans have already shown they can make life miserable for Allen, and doing that again would give Houston a major advantage. On the other side, Buffalo needs its revamped defense to keep Stroud from settling into a rhythm.
Overall, this feels like a potential playoff game being played in Week 1. Houston has the home-field advantage and has given Buffalo serious problems in this building, but the Bills have more offensive weapons than they did a year ago. I expect a close, physical game, with Buffalo having a slight edge late.
