Game Analysis:
SALT LAKE CITY — Arkansas travels to No. 21 Utah for one of the more interesting nonconference matchups of the week. Both teams are 1-0, but they looked very different in their openers: Arkansas beat North Alabama 31-14, while Utah dominated Idaho 66-14. It is also the first-ever football meeting between the programs, giving the Razorbacks a chance to make an immediate statement under new head coach Ryan Silverfield.
Utah’s biggest advantage is the way its offense performed in Week 1. Quarterback Devon Dampier threw three touchdowns and completed 13 of 18 passes, while the Utes piled up 633 total yards, including 364 on the ground. Wayshawn Parker also scored three touchdowns, giving Utah plenty of ways to attack an Arkansas defense that struggled to slow North Alabama at times.
Arkansas will need a much cleaner performance from quarterback KJ Jackson. He threw for 267 yards and three touchdowns against North Alabama, but the Razorbacks also committed three turnovers and struggled to establish the run. That becomes a much bigger problem against Utah's defense, especially with the game being played in a loud Rice-Eccles Stadium.
The biggest matchup is Arkansas' offensive line against Utah's pressure and front seven. If Jackson has time and Arkansas can run the ball, the Razorbacks have enough athleticism to make this interesting. But Utah's ability to pressure the quarterback while also accounting for Dampier's mobility could make it difficult for Arkansas to stay on schedule.
Overall, this should be a much better test for both teams than their openers. Arkansas has the SEC talent to compete, but Utah looked considerably more complete in Week 1 and has won 26 of its last 32 home games. I expect the Razorbacks to keep it competitive early, but Utah should pull away late and win its first major test of the season.
