ATLANTA — No. 18 Tennessee travels to Georgia Tech for its first true road test of the season. The Vols opened with a dominant 56-9 win over Furman, while Georgia Tech is trying to rebound from a frustrating 14-13 loss to Colorado. It is also Tennessee’s first visit to Bobby Dodd Stadium since 1986, adding some history to an important early-season matchup.
Tennessee’s biggest storyline is freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon, who had an impressive debut with 226 passing yards and three touchdowns while adding 68 rushing yards and two more scores. The Vols also looked excellent defensively, recording seven sacks and 13 tackles for loss. Senior linebacker Arion Carter returns from suspension, giving that defense another major piece.
Georgia Tech has a much tougher task after struggling to run the ball against Colorado, finishing with just 51 rushing yards. The Yellow Jackets need a much better offensive performance from quarterback Alberto Mendoza and their skill group, particularly against a Tennessee defense that will bring significantly more pressure. Head coach Brent Key has already been openly critical of his team's performance, so expect a motivated Tech team.
The biggest question is whether Georgia Tech can make this a physical, close game and take advantage of the home crowd. Tennessee has the more talented roster and looked far more polished in Week 1, but the Yellow Jackets should be much more competitive than they were against Colorado. The Vols are favored by about 12.5 points, and I expect them to eventually pull away behind their defense and Brandon’s playmaking.
