ANN ARBOR — No. 11 Oklahoma travels to Michigan for a highly anticipated rematch of last year’s 24-13 Sooners victory. Oklahoma enters 1-0 after shutting out UTEP 51-0, while Michigan barely survived Western Michigan 13-12. The Wolverines are now unranked after that performance, making this an important early test for Kyle Whittingham’s first season at Michigan.
Oklahoma has looked much more convincing so far, particularly on defense. John Mateer returns at quarterback after accounting for 344 total yards against Michigan last season, and the Sooners' defensive front remains one of the strongest units in the country. Oklahoma's ability to pressure Bryce Underwood and force Michigan into obvious passing situations could be the biggest advantage in this matchup.
For Michigan, everything starts with Underwood. He struggled badly against Western Michigan, throwing for only 170 yards with an interception and a fumble, and Whittingham has already acknowledged that his starting job is not completely secure. Michigan also managed fewer than 60 rushing yards, so the offensive line and running game have to improve dramatically against an Oklahoma defense that was dominant in Week 1.
The biggest question is whether Michigan can turn this into the physical, low-scoring game it wants. Oklahoma won the line-of-scrimmage battle last year and controlled the game offensively, while Michigan's offense struggled to generate anything consistently. Playing at the Big House should help, but the Wolverines need a completely different performance from their offense to have a chance.
Overall, Oklahoma looks like the more complete team coming into this rematch. Michigan has the talent to make this competitive, especially at home, but the Sooners have the more reliable offense and defense right now. I expect a closer game than last year's matchup, but Oklahoma should have enough to win again.
