Game Analysis:
STILLWATER — No. 6 Oregon heads to Oklahoma State for one of the more intriguing nonconference games of the weekend. The Ducks are 1-0 after beating Boise State 34-27, while Oklahoma State is 0-1 after losing to Tulsa in Eric Morris’ first game as head coach. Oregon is a heavy favorite, around 23.5 points, but Boone Pickens Stadium gives the Cowboys a chance to make this uncomfortable.
Oregon’s biggest storyline is how the Ducks respond after a closer-than-expected opener. Dante Moore returns at quarterback and has plenty of weapons around him, but Oregon gave up 27 points to Boise State and will want to clean up defensively. The Ducks have the talent advantage almost everywhere, so avoiding the mistakes that allowed Boise to stay in the game will be important.
Oklahoma State is beginning a completely new era after last year’s disastrous season and the departure of Mike Gundy. Eric Morris brought in a large group of transfers from North Texas, including quarterback Drew Mestemaker, but the Cowboys struggled in their 14-3 loss to Tulsa. They’ll need a dramatically better offensive performance to keep pace with Oregon.
The biggest question is whether Oklahoma State can turn the home crowd into a real factor. If the Cowboys can run the ball, protect Mestemaker and force Oregon into a few long third downs, they could hang around. But if Oregon gets its passing game going early, the Ducks have enough depth to take control quickly.
Overall, Oklahoma State should play with plenty of energy in its home opener, but Oregon is simply operating at a different level right now. I expect the Cowboys to have some good moments, especially early, but the Ducks should gradually pull away and win comfortably.
