Game Analysis:
PALO ALTO — No. 7 Miami opens its 2026 season on the road against Stanford, which already has a 37-27 win over Hawai‘i under its belt. The Hurricanes are coming off a national championship-game appearance and enter with legitimate College Football Playoff expectations, while Stanford gets the advantage of playing at home and already having some game experience.
Miami’s biggest question is how quickly Darian Mensah and the offense get rolling. Mensah is one of the country’s top Heisman candidates, and Miami returns plenty of explosive talent around him. The Hurricanes also have a major defensive advantage on paper, although their offensive line depth and the need to replace several NFL-caliber players will be worth watching early.
Stanford has a much tougher challenge defensively. Davis Warren and running back Micah Ford looked good against Hawai‘i, with Ford scoring three touchdowns, but Stanford struggled with tackling and coverage at times. Against Miami’s speed and depth, the Cardinal will need to be much cleaner and find a way to keep the Hurricanes from creating explosive plays.
The matchup could come down to whether Stanford can keep this competitive into the second half. Miami is favored by roughly 24.5 points and has the talent advantage at virtually every level, while Stanford’s best path is to control tempo, run the football and make Miami work for everything. Stanford also has several receivers dealing with injuries, while Miami currently has only two players listed out.
Overall, Miami should eventually pull away. Stanford’s Week 0 win makes this a more interesting opener than the talent gap might suggest, but Miami has the quarterback, defensive front and overall depth to take control. The Hurricanes should leave Palo Alto with a strong opening statement as they begin another run at the playoff.
