Game Analysis:
SALT LAKE CITY — Idaho and No. 21 Utah meet Thursday night at Rice-Eccles Stadium in the Utes' 2026 season opener. Kickoff is 7:00 p.m. MT on ESPNU, with Utah opening as a massive favorite after an 11–2 campaign last season. Idaho enters 0–1 after a narrow Week 1 loss, while Utah is making its debut under new head coach Morgan Scalley.
The biggest storyline for Utah is obviously the beginning of the Morgan Scalley era. Scalley spent years as Kyle Whittingham's defensive coordinator before taking over the program, and now he gets his first regular-season game as head coach. He inherits a team that finished 11–2 last year and closed the season by beating Nebraska 44–22 in the Las Vegas Bowl.
The Utes' biggest weapon is Devon Dampier. The dual-threat quarterback started 12 games last season and produced 2,490 passing yards, 24 touchdown passes, 835 rushing yards and 10 rushing scores. New offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven is expected to give Dampier more freedom in a system that should be somewhat more aggressive and versatile than Utah's traditional approach.
Utah also brings back Wayshawn Parker, who rushed for 981 yards and averaged an impressive 6.6 yards per carry last season. That gives the Utes a powerful one-two punch in the backfield and should allow Scalley to establish the physical identity Utah has traditionally relied upon. Defensively, linebacker Johnathan Hall and safety Jackson Bennee return after leading the team in tackles in 2025.
For Idaho, this is an enormous opportunity against a ranked Big 12 opponent. The Vandals already got their season underway in a heartbreaking Week 1 game, but Joshua Wood was outstanding, producing a career-high 405 total yards. Receiver Tony Harste was equally impressive, recording 180 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Those two give Idaho legitimate explosive-play potential even against Utah's superior depth.
The matchup ultimately comes down to whether Idaho can keep Utah from turning its talent advantage into an early blowout. The Utes were exceptionally good in first quarters last season, outscoring opponents 113–41, and Idaho cannot afford to fall behind immediately. The Vandals' best path is to let Wood create plays, shorten the game with the run and force Utah to execute rather than simply overwhelm them physically.
For Utah, watch Dampier's development as a passer, Parker's explosiveness and how Scalley's defense looks in its first official game under his leadership. For Idaho, Wood and Harste are the obvious players to watch, particularly whether they can generate big plays against a much deeper opponent.
There's also some history here: the schools haven't played since 1993, when Idaho stunned Utah 28–17 in Salt Lake City. Overall, Utah leads the series 14–12–2.
Ultimately, this is Utah's first chance to establish what the post-Whittingham era looks like, while Idaho gets a chance to make an early-season statement against a ranked Big 12 team. The Utes should have the overwhelming talent advantage, but Idaho's explosive offense gives it a path to make this uncomfortable if Wood can keep the Vandals within striking distance.
