Game Analysis:
KNOXVILLE — No. 8 Kentucky travels to Neyland Stadium on Saturday, November 7, to face No. 16 Tennessee in one of the biggest games of the SEC weekend. The Wildcats enter at 7-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play, riding a six-game winning streak. Tennessee is 6-2 and 3-2 in the SEC, and will have the advantage of playing in front of its home crowd for this highly anticipated rivalry matchup. Both teams are coming off their bye weeks, giving them extra time to prepare.
Kentucky's resurgence has been driven by quarterback Kenny Minchey, whose ability to protect the football has been a major factor in the Wildcats' winning streak. He has thrown for 1,755 yards, 14 touchdowns and just one interception. Kentucky is averaging 32.9 points per game and has shown it can win close contests, including overtime victories over South Carolina and LSU. Running back CJ Baxter and the Wildcats' ground attack will also be important against Tennessee's aggressive defense.
Tennessee counters with a productive offense of its own, averaging 32.3 points per game. Running back DeSean Bishop has been a major contributor with 957 rushing yards, while receiver Mike Matthews leads the Volunteers with 528 receiving yards. Quarterback George MacIntyre will need to make plays against a Kentucky defense that has been solid at forcing opponents into difficult situations. Tennessee's ability to establish Bishop early could help open up opportunities in the passing game.
The biggest matchup may be Kentucky's disciplined offense against Tennessee's defensive front. The Volunteers have been especially effective at getting after opposing quarterbacks, and their pass rush could make life difficult for Minchey. Kentucky, meanwhile, has done an excellent job avoiding turnovers and penalties. If the Wildcats can maintain that discipline and keep Tennessee from creating negative plays, they have a legitimate chance to pull off the road win.
Tennessee leads the all-time series 86-26-9 and has won the last five meetings, including a 56-34 victory last season. The Volunteers will look to use that history and their home-field advantage to continue their dominance in the rivalry. Kentucky has been one of the SEC's biggest surprises this season, though, and its six-game winning streak gives it plenty of confidence. Tennessee's defensive strength and home crowd make the Volunteers a slight favorite, but this should be a competitive game with major SEC implications.
