BLOOMINGTON — Northwestern travels to face No. 5 Indiana in the Hoosiers’ Big Ten opener. Indiana is 3-0 after dominant wins over North Texas, Howard and Western Kentucky, while Northwestern is 2-0 after beating South Dakota State 34-18 and Colorado 41-7. The Wildcats will be playing their first road game of the season.
Indiana has been especially productive on both sides of the ball, outscoring its first three opponents 145-16. Quarterback Josh Hoover has completed 72.5% of his passes for 649 yards, 10 touchdowns and no interceptions, while the Hoosiers' defense has recorded consecutive shutouts entering Big Ten play.
Northwestern enters with plenty of momentum of its own. Quarterback Aidan Chiles accounted for five touchdowns in the 41-7 win over Colorado, throwing for 241 yards and three touchdowns while adding two rushing scores. The Wildcats also forced four turnovers in the victory, and they are averaging 37.5 points per game through two contests.
The biggest matchup is Northwestern’s experienced offense against an Indiana defense that has been extremely difficult to score against. Chiles brings a dual-threat element that Indiana coach Curt Cignetti specifically highlighted, while Northwestern’s defense will have to deal with an Indiana passing attack that has yet to commit an interception.
This is also the beginning of Big Ten play for both teams. Northwestern will be playing its final game before moving into the newly completed Ryan Field, while Indiana gets its first conference test after three games against non-Big Ten opponents.
