CHICAGO — The Patriots and Bears both enter at 4-2, making Thursday night a matchup between two teams firmly in the early playoff picture. New England has won three straight, including Sunday’s 26-19 victory over the Jets, while Chicago is coming off a 31-23 road win over Atlanta.
The biggest storyline for Chicago is the return of Caleb Williams. After missing three games with a hamstring injury, Williams returned against Atlanta and completed 30 of 36 passes for 305 yards. The Bears also own the NFL’s top-ranked rushing attack at 160.7 yards per game, giving them a strong complement to Williams.
New England counters with Drake Maye, who has helped turn the Patriots around after a 1-2 start. The Patriots are averaging 374.2 total yards per game, seventh in the NFL, and Maye will have A.J. Brown available as a major downfield threat, although Brown has been dealing with an ankle injury.
Both defenses have been strong. New England is allowing 300.8 yards per game, while Chicago is allowing 302.3. The Bears have generated 17 sacks, so protecting Maye will be critical, especially against a Chicago front featuring Austin Booker.
The central matchup is Maye against Chicago’s pass rush and Williams against New England’s secondary. Christian Gonzalez gives the Patriots a premier option against Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III. New England dominated the previous meeting 19-3 in 2024, sacking Williams nine times, but this Bears offense enters the rematch in a much stronger position.
