Match Analysis:
Arizona State against TCU will be a lot closer game than people think. And as we have already seen in this single-elimination style of play, anything can happen. I mean, come on, Furman just beat Virginia; who knows what’s possible? I love the momentum Arizona State will be heading into this game with. That momentum, paired with their experience against ranked teams, has me really liking them in an upset situation.
I’ll not be the first to admit that TCU is a very solid basketball team. There is a reason why they are in the top half of seeding right now. However, they have a bad habit of losing in big games. They lost to Texas in the championship game of the Big 12 Conference. Plus, they lost a majority of their games against ranked teams this year. But again, I’m not here to lie to the public; this team has some hoopers. Mike Miles Jr is one of the aforementioned hoopers. The kid has been averaging 17.3 points per game this season on almost 50% shooting. That’s some crazy efficiency for a team’s top scorer. Not to mention their pass-first guard in Damion Baugh, who also happens to be lockdown on defense; historically, I’d say it never hurts to have a player like that on the roster. The issue is the one weakness of Arizona State’s elite defense is a team that can rake from the three-point line. And TCU, well, they’ve been shooting a dismal 30% from that three-point line.
Arizona State has a great defense, especially against teams that can’t make a three-point shot. Trying to drive on this Sun Devils team seems similar to scaling the Berlin Wall. Pretty much impossible, and in order to do it, you have to get unconventional. Not only has this Arizona State team shown that they can beat top-end tough opponents, but they’ve also shown that when the lights shine brightest, they turn up the heat. In their play-in game, not only did Arizona State win, they won by 25. That win not only gave this team all the confidence they needed to take on any team, but it also got their shooters in the groove. Shooters like Desmond Cambridge and DJ Horne had 17 and 20 points, respectively.
No matter who wins this game, it will be an incredibly fun matchup to watch. Arizona State has the greater momentum and a defense that is great against bad shooting teams. Give me Arizona State on the upset!
