FARGO — Jacksonville State and North Dakota State open the 2026 college football season Saturday in one of the most intriguing Week 0 matchups. The game kicks off at 4:30 p.m. CT at the Fargodome and will air on CBS Sports Network. It is also a historic night for North Dakota State: the Bison are making their FBS debut after decades of dominance at the FCS level.
The biggest storyline is obviously NDSU's transition to the FBS. The Bison went 12–1 in 2025, made their 16th consecutive postseason appearance, and enter their first Mountain West season with enormous expectations. They aren't entering the FBS as a rebuilding program—they're bringing an established winning culture, experienced coaching infrastructure and a program that has won at the highest level of the subdivision.
That makes Jacksonville State a fascinating opponent. The Gamecocks have already been through the transition from FCS to FBS, joining the FBS in 2023, and they've been remarkably consistent since doing so. Jax State has won exactly nine games in each of the last four seasons, including a 9–5 record in 2025. They therefore have considerably more experience playing at the FBS level than NDSU does, even though the Bison have the stronger historical résumé.
The matchup should be heavily influenced by physicality and line play. North Dakota State's traditional identity has been built around controlling the line of scrimmage, establishing the run and playing complementary football. Jacksonville State, meanwhile, has developed into a legitimate FBS program capable of handling physical opponents. Whoever wins first down and consistently creates manageable third downs should have a significant advantage.
For NDSU, quarterback play is one of the biggest questions. For Jacksonville State, the opportunity is almost the opposite. Their experience in these types of games could be particularly valuable early, when NDSU is dealing with the excitement and pressure surrounding its historic debut.
There's also plenty of history between these programs. Jacksonville State leads the all-time series 2–1, with the most recent meeting coming in the 2015 FCS championship game. The teams have now agreed to a home-and-home series, with NDSU making the return trip to Jacksonville in 2029.
The Fargodome factor could be enormous. North Dakota State isn't just making its FBS debut—the Bison are doing it at home in front of a fan base accustomed to championship football. The atmosphere should be one of the most intense environments of Week 0, and Jacksonville State will have to handle that immediately. NDSU is currently favored by about 6½ points, with the total around 46½–47½, reflecting expectations of a relatively competitive, lower-scoring game.
For Jacksonville State, the keys are surviving the opening surge, protecting the football and making NDSU defend the entire field. For North Dakota State, it's about establishing the run, avoiding costly mistakes and proving immediately that its championship-level culture can translate to the FBS.
Ultimately, this is much bigger than a normal Week 0 game. Jacksonville State gets an opportunity to knock off an FBS newcomer with an established championship pedigree, while North Dakota State gets its first chance to show the rest of college football that the Bison belong at this level. A victory for NDSU would validate the transition; a Jacksonville State win would immediately become one of the biggest results of the opening weekend.
