BALTIMORE — The Washington Commanders and Baltimore Ravens meet Friday night at M&T Bank Stadium in the final preseason game for both teams. It’s also a particularly useful matchup because the teams will hold a joint practice beforehand, giving players an extra day of competitive reps before the final roster decisions. Baltimore is coming off a 13–3 win over Minnesota, while Washington lost 17–13 to Detroit.
For Washington, the biggest focus is the quarterback depth and the young players trying to force their way onto the roster. Jayden Daniels' preseason workload remains something to monitor, but the more important evaluation is behind him. Athan Kaliakmanis has been one of Washington's most impressive young players this summer, showing improved accuracy and decision-making against Detroit.
The Commanders also have significant defensive questions because of injuries. Odafe Oweh and K'Lavon Chaisson are dealing with injuries, while the team just added veteran edge rusher Boogie Basham for additional depth. Rookie linebacker Sonny Styles has been one of the brighter developments of camp, particularly with his speed and coverage ability.
For Baltimore, this is the final opportunity for first-year head coach Jesse Minter and his staff to evaluate the bottom half of the roster before cuts. The Ravens are 2–0 this preseason after beating Philadelphia and Minnesota, and rookie quarterback Joe Fagnano has been a particularly encouraging story. He continued to play efficiently in the Minnesota game and has given Baltimore something to think about behind the established quarterback room.
The joint practice could be the most valuable part of the week. Washington gets to test its young offensive players against Baltimore's defense, while the Ravens get an extended look at their own young secondary and pass rush against a Commanders offense that is trying to establish itself under Dan Quinn.
For Washington, watch Kaliakmanis, the young linebackers and the crowded secondary. For Baltimore, the focus is on Fagnano, defensive depth and the players fighting for the final roster spots.
Ultimately, this is a last audition before the regular season. Washington probably has more unanswered questions, while Baltimore enters with a little more stability. But with roster cuts looming Sunday, there will be plenty of players on both sides treating Friday night like their biggest game of the summer.
