LUBBOCK — No. 22 Houston travels to face No. 13 Texas Tech in a major Big 12 opener. Both teams enter 2-0, with Texas Tech coming off a 35-24 road win at Oregon State and Houston having dominated Southern 77-6. The matchup is also a rematch of last season’s 35-11 Texas Tech win.
Houston has been one of the more experienced teams in the country and has shown plenty of offensive versatility through two games. Quarterback Conner Weigman remains a major piece of the Cougars’ offense, while the team’s depth has been on display. Houston also added talent along the offensive line in the offseason to better protect Weigman after he was injured against Texas Tech last year.
Texas Tech enters the game with considerable momentum after winning at Oregon State. The Red Raiders have built one of the Big 12’s deeper defenses, returning players such as A.J. Holmes, Brice Pollock and Ben Roberts. Their run defense has been particularly strong, while the defense continues to work through some adjustments in the secondary.
The biggest storyline is Houston’s rushing attack against Texas Tech’s defensive front. The Cougars want to establish the run and keep Weigman out of obvious passing situations, while Tech will look to make Houston consistently throw against its experienced defense. Texas Tech also has the advantage of playing in a sold-out home environment.
