Hm, I don’t want to say it, but I’m afraid I’ll have to. Tennessee got super lucky with this matchup. And no, I’m not saying that FDU would be a harder matchup for Tennessee than FAU. But not seeing Purdue at this point in the tournament and instead seeing the nine-seed of the East must be nice. FAU is a solid team but they’re not nearly as good as Tennessee, I’m taking Tennessee in this matchup and I recommend you do the same.
What to say about Florida Atlantic. Well, they made it past the first two rounds of the tournament. Which not for nothing, is a feat that Kansas, Purdue, Arizona, and even Baylor weren’t able to pull off. So do with that information what you will. Their road to this game against Tennessee has not been the smoothest or most impressive. So far they’ve beaten Memphis by 1, which while technically an upset was not by any means a convincing win. And then they beat a sixteen-seed by single digits in the second round. Maybe I’m just being a Scrooge, but neither of those wins screams ‘great team’ to me. In terms of players, Johnell Davis has been having himself a tournament so far, averaging 20.5 points per game in the first two games. He’s been the lifeline that this team needed to beat Memphis and absolutely outclassed FDU.
Tennessee is what the kids like to call, a better team than Florida Atlantic. They have beaten Duke by 13 on the road to this game and made it look easy. The beautiful thing about this team is that they can truly beat you collectively or individually. During the Louisiana game, there was no hero ball, just five guys with 8+ points and a gritty win. And then the next game against Duke they needed a hero, and boom, enter Olivier Nkamhoua. He dropped 27 points on 10-13 shooting looking completely unstoppable. This Tennessee team has known nothing but success in both the regular season and this tournament and I don’t think that a school more commonly referred to by their acronym than by their actual name is going to stop them now.
